Bjelko records double-double in road loss to MSM

EMMITSBURG, MD. - Brooke Bjelko of the Bryant Univeristy women's basketball team recorded her fifth double-double of the season, and 18th of her career with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the 68-52 road loss to Mount St. Mary's this afternoon.

Mariona Planes Fortuny rejoined the starting lineup and registered 12 points and eight rebounds.

  • The Bulldogs trailed by two with six minutes left, and MSM went on an 18-4 run.

 How it Happened

  • The first quarter was a tale of two halves as the Mountaineers got off to a 14-7 lead with three and a half minutes left before the Black and Gold stormed back and outscored MSM 8-5, which resulted in a 19-15 deficit heading into the second quarter. Bjelko led the way with seven points in the quarter. Megan Bodziony had three, Fatou Jallow and Fortuny posted two, and Shannon O'Connor scored one.
  • Mount got out to a 25-17 lead with 5:35 left in the first half, then the Bulldogs clamped down on defense and outdueled MSM 18-6, resulting in a 35-31 halftime lead for Bryant. Fortuny tallied six, and Bjelko had five. Lucie Castagne recorded five, and Bodziony posted four. Castagne and Fortuny were crucial to the run making the last five baskets for the Black and Gold in the half.
  • Bryant scored four points compared to the Mountaineers eight points in the first six minutes of the second half, which tied it up at 39. MSM scored six straight points. before Bodziony converted a layup making the deficit four heading into the final quarter (46-42). Bjelko had four in the quarter.
  • The Bulldogs and MSM traded blows back-and-forth, with Bryant getting within two with 5:56 left in the game. Then Mount went on an 18-4 run resulting in a 68-52 loss for Bryant.
