Bulldogs downed by UMass in 2019 opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – A multi-point game from senior Meredith James (Essex Fells, N.J.) led the Bulldog attack, but a fast start from UMass proved insurmountable Friday night in the season opener of the Bryant University women's lacrosse team at the Conaty Indoor Athletic Center.

COACH ROCHE'S COMMENTS
"We scheduled UMass because we know they're a talented and well-coached team. This is a good learning experience for us and moving forward will be used as motivation for our team."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMass jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes before Jess DeMeo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) scored the first Bulldog goal of the year with 17:01 remaining in the first half.
  • The teams would trade tallies twice more as senior Jasmine Perkins (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored to make it 11-2 and sophomore Natalie Langella (Northport, N.Y.) found the back of the net to bring Bryant within 12-3 with 10:27 to go before halftime.
  • UMass would score 11 straight before James recorded the final Bryant goal of the night with 3:03 to play in the game.

STATS

  • James notched a goal, an assist and a draw control.
  • Perkins recorded a goal, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Senior Lauren Britton (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) collected three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Junior Sloane Sweitzer (Old Lyme, Conn.) picked up four ground balls and added two caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore Abbi England (Longford Mills, Ontario) chipped in with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Bryant recorded 13 caused turnovers as a team.

GAME NOTES

  • Bryant drops to 0-1 all-time against UMass.
  • The Bulldogs fall to 2-2 in games played in the Conaty Indoor Athletic Center.

Bryant will have 11 days before its next game, when the Bulldogs face America East foe Albany in the Capital Region of New York, Tuesday, Feb. 26.
