DeMeo scores six as Bryant downs Canisius, 18-13

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Jess DeMeo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) scored a season-high six goals and junior Caitlin Breglia (Long Beach, N.Y.) collected seven points, including her 100th career goal, as the Bryant University women's lacrosse team won for the fourth time in its last five games with an 18-13 victory over Canisius Wednesday afternoon.

DeMeo tied Lauren Descalzo for Bryant's Division I career points record with 195. Senior Lauren Britton (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) corralled 12 draw controls, good for second in a single game in program history, while closing within one career draw control of her sister Nicole's all-time program record of 171.

"Today was a good team win. I'm especially proud of our offensive effort in netting 18 goals with eight players contributing to our scoring total. Senior captains Jess DeMeo and Lauren Britton both stepped up for us today – Jess with six goals on offense and Lauren with 12 draw controls in the midfield. We're excited to turn the page and work to get ready for UConn."

KEY MOMENT

  • Canisius took a 3-2 lead 3:05 into the contest and Bryant responded by scoring the next six goals. The Bulldogs would lead by at least three the rest of the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams combined for nine goals in the first 9:04 of the game with three of Bryant's six goals coming from DeMeo. Sophomore Devon Bolen (Queensbury, N.Y.), freshman Alexa Weber (South Windsor, Conn.) and Britton also added goals.
  • Junior Chachie Smigliani (Hanover, Mass.) and Breglia chipped in to close out a 6-0 run that put Bryant ahead 8-3 with 9:49 to play in the opening half.
  • Breglia would add another in between Golden Griffin goals as Bryant took a 9-5 lead into the half.
  • Canisius cut the Bryant lead to three out of the half before goals from Britton and sophomore Natalie Langella (Northport, N.Y.) pushed the lead back to five at 11-6 with 23:38 to go.
  • After a pair of Canisius goals, Weber and sophomore Caitlin Bolen (Queensbury, N.Y.) scored to extend the Bryant advantage to 13-8 with 13:11 to go.
  • Breglia added a goal and DeMeo scored thrice more to put the Bulldogs up 17-12 before Devon Bolen scored with 0.2 seconds remaining for the final 18-13 margin.
