Bulldogs fall to Brown in Ocean State Cup

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Cassidy Burns (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded four points and Natalie Langella (Northport, N.Y.) netted a hat trick but it wasn't enough as the Bryant University women's lacrosse team fell to Brown, 12-7, in the Ocean State Cup on Saturday at Beirne Stadium. 

Burns finished with a goal and three assists, Langella recorded her sixth-career hat trick and senior Maggie Pressler (Smithfield, R.I.) chipped in three points.

COACH ROCHE'S COMMENTS

"Brown played well and controlled the draw most of the game," said head coach Brianna Roche. "We saw some good things in our team but have work to do in preparation for UVM." 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bryant broke the ice quickly, scoring 35 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Alexa Weber (South Windsor, Conn.) converted a free position shot. 
  • Brown answered four-straight goals, three out of the pocket of Risa Mosenthal. 
  • Pressler ended the run as she finished on the back door off a pass from Burns with 20:05 left in the first half. 
  • The teams would then trade goals the remainder of the half, with Langella potting her first two of the day to make it 7-4 in favor of Brown at the half. 
  • Burns and Pressler then opened the second half with goals, pulling Bryant within two, 8-6. 
  • Brown answered with two of its own to make it a four-goal game with 13:37 left. 
  • Langella's third goal of the game made it 10-7 with 10:55 left. 

STATS

  • Burns led the Bulldogs with four points on a goal and three assists. 
  • Langella netted three goals.
  • Pressler recorded two goals and an assist.
  • Devon Bolen (Queesnbury, N.Y.) registered four draw controls.
  • Katie Clark (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the Bulldogs with three caused turnovers. 
  • Bryant led the game in ground balls, 14-10. 

GAME NOTES

  • Langella now has six career hat tricks. 
  • Burns notched four points and has seven points in the first two games.

Bryant hosts Vermont on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Beirne Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
