Bryant downs Vermont, 12-8

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Alexa Weber (South Windsor, Conn.) tallied a game-high of three goals to help the Bryant University women's lacrosse team remain undefeated against Vermont on Wednesday afternoon, 12-8.

COACH ROCHE'S COMMENTS

"Today was a good team win," said head coach Brianna Roche. "UVM battled until the very end and I'm proud of our players for maintaining their composure under pressure. Our defensive unit stepped up in a number of crucial moments today, and our offensive unit gained momentum as several players contributed points." 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams went goal for goal to start the game off at two apiece.
  • Maggie Pressler (Smithfield, R.I.) found Devon Bolen (Queensbury, N.Y.) in front of the net for the first of three-straight for the Black and Gold with tallies coming from Weber and Natalie Langella (Northport, N.Y.).
  • Vermont ended the run with a goal of its own but the Bulldogs answered with two more from Cassidy Burns (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Caitlin Bolen (Queensbury, N.Y.). The Catamounts went on to get one more just before the half to cut into Bryant's lead, 7-4.
  • The second half started with back and forth scoring as the Catamounts cut it to two, 10-8.
  • Senior Caitlin Breglia (Long Beach, N.Y.) buried a free position shot followed by a goal from Weber to end the game, 12-8, as the Bryant defense held Vermont off until the final horn.   

STATS

  • Weber led the Black and Gold with three goals.
  • Devon Bolen and Breglia each tallied two goals apiece.
  • Skylar Simmonds (Jupiter, Fla.), Caitlin Bolen, Burns, Langella, and Pressler all tallied one goal each.
  • Abbi England (Longford Mills, Ontario), Megan McCarthy (Northampton, Mass.), Burns, Langella, and Pressler each dished out an assist.
  • McCarthy led with a game-high eight draw controls.
  • Katie Clark (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the Bulldogs with four groundballs and three caused turnovers.  
  • Junior goalkeeper Gianna Kapoosuzian (Merrick, N.Y.) stopped six.
  • Bryant led, 22-19, in groundballs over Vermont.

GAME NOTES

  • Bryant remains undefeated against Vermont growing to an all-time series record of 3-0.

Bryant hits the road for the first time this season when they meet with Manhattan on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m. Saturday marks the first of a four-game road stretch as the Bulldogs don't return to Beirne Stadium until March 18.
