The Bulldogs defeat UMass during Friday afternoon meet

Smithfield, R.I.- The Bryant University women's swimming and diving team defeated UMass 180-114 Friday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Pool. This is the first time since January 12, 2012 that the women have defeated UMass.

 

Coach Keane's Comments

"We had a good time down in Florida. All of them worked really hard, it was great to see them step up a day and a half back and go as fast as they did today. Each of them really fought hard and pushed through, and the results showed. Back at it tomorrow!"

 

Notes and Notables

  • The Bulldogs started the meet on a great note with a first and third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Brittan), Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.), Reetta Kanervo (Oulu, Finland), and Alyvia Beaudion (Cypress, Texas) (1:47.30) teamed up to finish first. The team of Lindsey Choate (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), Heather Wong (Ramsey, N.J.), Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico), and Julia Larson (Wauwatosa, Wiss.) finished third (1:50.36).
  • The Black and Gold had a second and third-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle by Alyssa DiFiore (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Claire Russell (Naperville, Ill.). The duo finished with times of 10:54.65 and 11:14.49.
  • Bryant got their first individual victory from Erin Doruska (Ankeny, Iowa) in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.10. Fellow Bulldog Beaudion finished third in the same event (2:02.74).
  • The Bulldogs earned another victory in the 100 backstroke from Scifo (59.45) and Choate placed third (1:01.19).
  • Wong kept the theme of the meet going with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.59. Cannavan joined Wong on the podium finishing third with a time of 1:08.03.
  • Sammi Grenon (Cheshire, Conn.) pulled out another win for the Black and Gold in the 200 butterfly (2:08.37).
  • Bryant then had a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle with Kanervo winning (24.51) and Laurel Carey (Madison, N.J.) earning third-place with a time of 24.98.
  • The Bulldogs added another victory from Alexa Rivera (Boynton Beach, Fla.) in the 100 freestyle (53.50). Carey received third place with a time of 54.54.
  • The Black and Gold had another 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke by Scifo (2:07.56) and Doruska (2:10.57).
  • Wong earned another victory in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.84. Fellow classmate Rivera finished third (2:30.58).
  • Bryant got a second and third-place finish from Scifo (5:10.55) and Grenon (5:14.23) in the 500 freestyle.
  • In diving Kyri Chambo (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) placed third in the one and three-meter dive with scores of 188.89 and 207.68.
  • The Bulldogs continued their victorious day with another 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly. Kanervo received first-place (59.11) and Gendron finished in second-place with a time of 1:00.71.
  • Rivera earned her second victory of the day in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.07. Grenon had a second-place finish in the same event (2:12.90).
  • Bryant completed their victorious day with a first and third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Rivera, Cannavan, Choate, and Kanervo won with a time of 1:38.30. Fellow teammates Doruska, Beaudion, Larson, and Carey finished third (1:39.83).
