Bulldogs downed by North Texas, outlasted by Boston College Friday

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Bryant volleyball team fell to North Texas in three sets before being held off by host Boston College in five sets Friday in the first day of the BC Invitational at Power Gym.

COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS
"Kristin Kingi had her best outing of the season. Bodies were flying everywhere – into the bleachers and scorer's table – to keep the ball alive. We served aggressively and passed extremely well. Kiley Robbins got her first start of the season and was outstanding."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – NORTH TEXAS
Set 1 – The Bulldogs used a 6-1 run to erase an early deficit and take a 15-14 lead, but the Mean Green would respond with a 7-1 run to take control of the set. Freshman Erika Ward (Rochester, Mich.) tallied nine digs in the set.  
Set 2 – Junior Grace Richmeyer (DeSoto, Mo.) had four of her nine kills in the set, but the Mean Green opened up an 11-3 lead and posted a .385 hitting percentage in the 25-16 victory.
Set 3 – Ward recorded nine more digs in the set, but North Texas picked up six kills and three blocks from Alexis Wright to hold off the Bulldogs for a 25-22 set win to sweep the match.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – BOSTON COLLEGE
Set 1 – Bryant led 9-6 and tied the set at 13 before Boston College rattled off a 12-0 run to close out the set and take the frame 25-13. 
Set 2 – The Bulldogs answered with a 25-15 win in the second, closing the set on a 9-2 run that included two kills each from juniors Julia Flynn (Pembroke, Mass.) and Kristin Kingi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). The duo combined for seven kills in the set. 
Set 3 – Bryant took its first lead of the set at 7-6 and pulled away for the 25-18 third-set win. Flynn had six kills in the set.
Set 4 – Boston College trailed 18-15 in the set but staved off defeat with the 25-23 victory. Bryant cut it to 23-22 on a Richmeyer ace and 24-23 on a kill by senior Kiley Robbins (Garland, Texas) before the Eagles finished off the set.
Set 5 – Bryant opened the deciding set with a 3-1 advantage, but Boston College answered with four straight points and did not trail again in the set.
 
STATS
Flynn posted 16 kills and 13 digs to lead the Bulldogs against Boston College, while Kingi added 14 kills and 12 digs.
Robbins notched 12 kills against the Eagles.
Ward tallied 18 digs in the North Texas match and 14 against Boston College.
Kingi and Richmeyer led the Bulldogs with nine kills each in the North Texas match.
Freshman Alisi Motu'apuaka (Fort Benning, Ga.) chipped in 17 assists, seven digs and three aces against the Eagles.
Sophomore Brianna Bruny (Biscayne Park, Fla.) notched three blocks against Boston College.
 
MATCH NOTES
Bryant falls to 0-1 against North Texas and 1-2 against Boston College.
The Boston College match was the first five-set contest of 2017 for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs close out the BC Invitational Saturday at 2 p.m. when they face Princeton.
