Lodge finishes 10th to lead Bulldogs at Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa. –  Bryant senior Melissa Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished 10th overall in a field of almost 200 runners on Friday as the Bryant cross country team competed in the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.

The Bulldog women tied for 13th among the 24 schools competing, while the men's team ran to a 14th place finish among 20 schools at the Paul Short.

The men were a led by senior Ryan Poholek (North Attleboro, Mass.), who finished 52nd overall with a time of 26:19 in the 8K course. Freshman Noah Tellier (North Kingstown, R.I.) ran a career-best time, finishing 59th with a time of 26:29, just 10 seconds behind Poholek.

COACH CARROLL'S THOUGHTS

"Overall, I'm happy with our performance today," said Bryant head cross country coach Noah Carroll. "There were a couple things I want us to improve on, but with a young team on both the men's and women's side, we accomplished a lot. Most of the women went through the 5K split at their season's best or personal records today and then ran another tough kilometer.

"The men went out and ran tough in a race that didn't go quite as fast as it normally does. Had everyone gotten dragged out, like the Paul Short normally does, they'd have all run 20 seconds faster today.

"It's back to work tomorrow to fix and improve on things. We're a month out from NEC's and the hay is not in the barn just yet."

MEET NOTES

  • Each of the men who ran in the Paul Short Run improved on their time over last week's Ted Owen Invitational. Of those, all but one finished with their best time of the season.
  • Poholek time of 26:19 is the best time by a Bulldog in 2017, topping Tellier's time of 26:58.8 set at the Nassaney Invitational.
  • This run was further than the normal run for the women. The Paul Short Run course is a 6K, while typically the women run a 5K race. Despite the distance, Lodge's average-mile was still 4.5 seconds faster than her time at the Nassaney Invitational.
  • Sophomore Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) ran to a 55th-place finish, which was in the top 30-percent of runners.

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs will next compete on Oct. 13 in the Rothenberg Run, which will be run at Goddard State Park in Warwick.
