SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After establishing herself as an unforgettable student-athlete and enshrining herself amidst the record books and as a pioneer for a program in transition to Division I over the last four years, Bryant University volleyball senior Jazmin Stoner (Durango, Colo.) earned perhaps her most distinguishable honor with the Black and Gold last week after receiving the 2011-12 RIAIAW Distinguished Athlete Award in a ceremony last week hosted by Bryant University in the Bello Center.

A standout on the volleyball team through the last four seasons, Stoner enjoyed another fine season in her final year with the Black and Gold, capping off a decorated career that saw her leave her mark as one of the best players in recent memory. She led the team in kills (365), points scored (403) and ranked second on the squad with 296 digs.

With the Bulldogs set to become eligible for postseason competition in the fall of 2012, Stoner leaves Smithfield in sixth place on the career leader board in career kills with 1,299 and also finishes in 19th place in program history with 912 digs during her four-year campaign.

“Jaz has always known that media attention, playing time and individual honors aren’t as important as knowing that you and your teammates have responded to the challenge together,” head coach Theresa Garlacy said during the ceremony.  “Setting goals for our program is something that Jaz has helped to do and constantly refers back to them periodically throughout the season.”

Stoner has secured a Graduate Assistant position at Springfield College and will continue to develop her love of sport while earning her Master’s Degree this coming fall. She will graduate with a stellar 3.7 overall GPA and a 4.0 over the last two semesters.  In addition, Stoner was integral toward the addition of the Sport Studies concentration at Bryant and completed it in just one academic year.

A member of SAAC, Stoner completed a four-year optional leadership program at Bryant and was selected to serve on the NCAA Athletic Certification Committee as Bryant in our final year of reclassifying to Division I. She will also be receiving the Psychology Commencement Award which is for the top senior psychology major.
