Bryant Baseball Coach Jon Sjogren Resigns to Take Similar Position at Rollins College

BRYANT BASEBALL COACH JON SJOGREN NAMED HEAD COACH AT ROLLINS COLLEGE

SMITHFIELD, RI -  Bryant University head baseball coach Jon Sjogren has announced his resignation from the University to take a similar position at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.  The announcement was made today by Rollins interim Athletic Director Pennie Parker.

“We are certainly going to miss Jon, whose career at Bryant as both a student-athlete and coach has been exemplary,” said Director of Athletics Dan Gavitt.  “He built the Bryant baseball program into one of the best in the Northeast as evidenced by a trip to the College World Series last year. We are very happy for him to have the opportunity to coach at a storied baseball program in Florida.”

Sjogren, a Millis, MA native and 1988 graduate of Bryant University, recently completed his 15th season at Bryant, guiding the Bulldogs to three NCAA appearances and four Northeast-10 Conference titles.  In 2004, Sjogren guided the Bulldogs to their best season in school history, winning the Northeast Regional Championship and earning a berth in the College World Series.  Bryant finished the year with a record 40 wins and a No. 6 national ranking.  Sjogren posted a career record of 360-305-1 as coach of the Bulldogs.

Sjogren, 39, who will take the helm of the Rollins program August 1, was a member of the Florida Southern 1985 NCAA National Championship team before transferring to Bryant for the remainder of his career. As a player, Sjogren earned All-New England and all-conference honors and finished with a career batting average of .370.

After graduation, Sjogren spent two years as an assistant coach at the University of Rhode Island before return to take over the Bryant program in the fall of 1990.  He earned a master’s degree from Rhode Island College in 1993 and a doctorate in education from Boston University in 1998.

Rollins College, located in Winter Park, Florida, has advanced to the NCAA Tournament three out of the last four years and won the Sunshine Conference title in 2004.  Last season, the Tars posted a record of 37-18.

Bryant will begin a search immediately to find a replacement for Sjogren.  “I am confident we will find a successor in short order, due to the excellence of the baseball program that Jon has built here at Bryant,” added Gavitt.
