Baseball Drops 4-0 Decision to UMass Lowell Monday
Boxscore
SMITHFIELD, RI - UMass Lowell junior righty Jim
Shaughnessy (Lowell,
Mass.) pitched a complete game
four-hit shutout Monday, leading the River Hawks to a 4-0
Northeast-10 Conference win over Bryant. With one day left in
the conference regular season, the win likely
ensures UMass Lowell of hosting a first-round conference tournament
game on Wednesday as the River Hawks improve to 25-16 overall and
17-13 in the NE-10. The tournament's first round starts
Wednesday, with the remainder of the tournament scheduled for
LaLachuer Park in Lowell this weekend.
On Monday, the River Hawks scored a pair of runs in the first off
Bryant all-American Stephen Sloan
(Franklin,
Mass.) -pictured - and
added two more insurance runs in the third to pick up the
win. In the first, Nate Liebenow (Hampton,
N.H.) singled to center to score leadoff hitter
Sean Patno (Chelmsford, Mass.) from third to make
it 1-0.
Tim Manton
(Swansea,
Mass.) would come around to score
to make it 2-0. Manton doubled to left and after moving up to
third on Liebenow's single, the freshman came in to score when
Patrick Wilson
(Dracut,
Mass.) grounded into a double
play for the first and second outs of the inning.
Sloan allowed five hits and just two earned runs in the game while
striking out six, but never made it past the seventh.
Mickey Ryan
(Lowell,
Mass.), Mike Rocco
(Tewksbury,
Mass.), Chris Neil
(Cambridge,
Mass.) and Daryle Crowley
(Danvers,
Mass.) accounted for the four
Bryant (22-20, 16-14 NE-10) hits on the afternoon.
Shaughnessy struck out six batters and didn't allow a walk to earn
his second complete game victory of the season. Patno had two
of UML's six hits on the afternoon and scored twice.
