Bryant Baseball Shutout by #26 Mt. Olive 3-0

MT OLIVE, N.C. - Casey Hodges recorded a collegiate-high 11 strikeouts and took a perfect game into the fifth inning as nationally 26th-ranked Mount Olive defeated Bryant 3-0 in non-conference baseball Tuesday at Scarborough Field.

The Bulldogs, winners of seven of the last eight, were limited to just three hits in the loss.

Freshman Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) made his third start for Bryant on the hill. He went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out three. Almeida has a 1.89 era but has a 1-2 record while pitching 19 innings in his three starts.

1B Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.) had two of the Bulldogs' three hits, both singles. 3B Jason Alexander (Simsbury, CT) had the other Bulldog hit, also a single.

Hodges allowed only one hit in six innings and combined with three other pitchers for the Trojans' second shutout in their last four games.

Mount Olive (20-8) took advantage of a pair of fielding miscues to score two runs with two outs in the bottom of the first. David Cooper, who led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt at second base and scored when the ball was misplayed in center field. Dustin Richardson walked and Erik Lovett followed with an rbi-double on a misjudged fly ball that landed well in front of the Bryant right fielder.

Eric Polvani (Wallingford,  CT) pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit.

Bryant (7-8) is off Wednesday and will visit Barton Thursday (2 p.m.).
