Bryant Baseball Opens Conference Play with Doubleheader of Stonehill
EASTON, MASS. - Behind solid pitching, the Bryant University baseball team kicked off its conference schedule in style sweeping Stonehill College 2-1 and 4-0 Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, junior Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, CT) struck out seven in seven innings, surrendering just one run, but only managed a no-decision.
The Bulldogs broke a 1-1 tie in the ninth when Mark Dondero (Medfield, Mass.) hit a lead-off double and scored on a Pat McKenna (Orange, CT) fielder's choice.
Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.) notched his fourth save of the season, relieving Eric Polvani (Wallingford, CT) (2-0) who pitched a perfect eighth. Vuolo had two-on with two out but escaped when Taylor Ferugson (Charlton, Mass.) ran down a flyball to secure the victory.
In the second game, two Bryant pitchers shutout the Skyhawks, limiting them to just four hits while striking out ten.
Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) (2-0) struck out six in six innings while Polvani mowed down four over the final three to earn his first collegiate save.
Polvani pitched four innings during the doubleheader, earning a win and a save, while not allowing a hit and striking out four.
Nick Campbell (Raynam, Mass.) led the way at the plate with three hits while McKenna added two hits, one of them a double while getting a RBI. Three of Bryant's runs came off of a lead-off walk or hit-by-pitch.
The Bulldogs (9-9, 2-0) will host Stonehill Sunday (3 p.m.) in their home opener at the Bryant Baseball Complex. The game has been pushed back two hours due to the weather.
