Bryant Baseball Wins Home Opener 3-0 over AIC
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant Baseball opened its 2007 home schedule with a 3-0 shutout victory behind eight scoreless innings from freshman Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.).
With the win, Bryant moves over .500 for the first time this season and is a perfect 3-0 in the Northeast-10.
Almeida allowed just three hits; two of them bunt singles, while improving his record to 2-2 and lowering his e.r.a. to 1.33.
The Bulldogs scored all three runs in the sixth inning on six hits, including a lead-off double by 1B Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.) DH Mark Dondero (Medfield, Mass.) followed with his first of two doubles on the day, scoring Rocco and RF Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) With two outs and two on, CF Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) delivered a clutch single to left to bring home 2B Dave Muscatello (Hopkinton, Mass.) with the Bulldogs' third run.
That was plenty of run support for Almeida who struck out five Yellow Jackets. Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.) closed out the game with a perfect ninth for his fifth save to give the Bulldogs the shutout victory.
Campbell finished with three hits and a RBI, while Rocco, Ferguson, Muscatello, Dondero, and Pat McKenna (Orange, CT) each had two hits.
Bryant pounded out 13 hits, nine of them singles and left eight runners on base.
The Bulldogs (10-9, 3-0 NE-10) continue their six-game homestand against Assumption Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
