Baseball Swept by Lowell; Will Host NE-10 Quarterfinal Game Wednesday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant baseball team closed out its regular season losing a pair of games to UMass Lowell 5-0 and 6-5 on senior day at the Bryant Baseball Complex.

The loss in the first game insured a third-place finish for the Bulldogs. They will host Southern Connecticut, who is sixth in the conference, Wednesday in a Northeast-10 Quarterfinal matchup.

The Bulldogs managed just four hits against Lowell starter Joe Malzone, who hurled a complete-game shutout while striking out five.

Bryant starter Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) struggled on hill, allowing three runs and seven hits in 4.1 innings. Mike Upton (Chelmsford, Mass.) threw 4.1 solid innings of relief allowing two runs in the ninth inning.

Patrick Wilson had three hits and three RBIs for the Riverhawks.

In the second game, the Riverhawks jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, scattering 12 hits off Bulldog pitchers Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) and Eric Polvani (Wallingford, CT).

Bryant fought back in the late innings, scoring two in the seventh on a groundout from DH Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, CT) and a RBI single from LF T.J. Magnell (Leominster, Mass.).

They added three more in the eighth as CF Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) singled home RF Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) and C Jay Alexander (Simsbury, CT). They scored one more when Vigurs hit a sacrifice fly that brought Campbell home. But Stone grounded out to shortstop, leaving two on in scoring position to end the threat.

Cobb took his first loss of the season, dropping his record to 5-1.

Before the game, Upton and 1B Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.) were honored as part of senior day.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season 29-20 (21-9 NE-10) and will head to the conference tournament as the third seed.
