Advances to Conference Semis Against Lowell Friday

SMITHFIELD, R.I.

– The Bryant baseball team got seven strong innings from ace Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, CT) and advanced to the Northeast-10 Semifinals with a 4-2 victory over Southern Connecticut Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Baseball Complex.

With the win, the Bulldogs will take on second-ranked UMass-Lowell Friday at 4 p.m. in Lowell, Mass. Top seed Franklin Pierce will play Pace at 7 p.m. The tournament is double elimination.

Bryant got on the board in the second inning as 3B Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, RI) grounded out to second to bring home 1B Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.). DH Mark Dondero (Medfield, Mass.) followed with a run-scoring single, bringing home LF T.J. Magnell (Leominster, Mass.).

Eric Loh got his 7th win of the
season to lead the Bulldogs
to the 4-2 win (dspics.com).

The Bulldogs made it 3-0 in the third as Rocco singled to left, scoring RF Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.).

With the score 3-2 in the seventh and SS Jay Alexander (Simsbury, CT) at third with two outs, Rocco was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners for C Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, CT). And Vigurs came through, singling right back up the middle, giving the Bulldogs a big insurance run.

Loh gave way to set-up man Eric Polvani (Wallingford, CT) and Polvani put two runners on but got Billy Hite to strike out swinging to end the threat in the eighth.

In the ninth, closer Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.) hit one batter and walked another, but got Michael Diaz to ground out to Dave Muscatello (Hopkinton, Mass.) to end the game and give the Bulldogs their 30th win of the season. Vuolo notched his 12th save of the season, a school record.

Loh got his seventh win (7-2), striking out four and walking none in seven innings of work.

The Bulldogs were without their shortstop Pat McKenna (Orange, CT) for the first time all year due to injury, but Alexander replaced him flawlessly defensively.

Bryant (30-20, 21-9 NE-10), ranked fifth in the latest Division II Northeast Regional Rankings on ncaasports.com, will take on the Riverhawks in “Game 3” of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Friday in Lowell, Mass. at 4 p.m.

The game can be heard live on bryantbulldogs.com.
