McAvoy, Lacosse garner summer league accolades

MCAVOY NAMED NECBL PITCHER OF THE WEEK, LACOSSE NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR DUTCHMEN

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Bryant University baseball freshmen hurlers Kevin McAvoy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and Trevor Lacosse (Watervliet, N.Y./Christian Brothers) are off to strong starts in their respective summer leagues and have earned recognition early in the young season, garnering a pair of weekly accolades.

McAvoy, a starter for the NECBL's Keene Swamp Bats, pitched 6.2 hitless innings, striking out seven and issuing three walks in his second start of the season on June 19 before giving way to a bullpen that would keep the no-hit bid going. Relievers Ryan Horstman and Tyler Gauthier closed out the 5-0 victory over the Danbury Westerners without letting up a knock to combine for just the second no-hitter in Swamp Bat history and the first no-hit bid since 1997. McAvoy, along with his relievers, was named the NECBL Pitcher of the Week for his efforts. He currently sits at 2-1 on the season with a 3.06 ERA and 16 strikeouts in three starts.

Lacosse is off to a similar start for the Albany Dutchmen of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, where he has a 3-0 record and two saves out of the bullpen. The 5-foot-11 southpaw has yet to let up an earned run in his nine innings of work and has earned his role as the team's closer. Lacosse has fanned 16 batters on the season and boasts an impressive .138 opponent batting average. He was named the team's player of week following his second win.
