Mullen named captain for 2015

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University baseball head coach Steve Owens is proud to announce that senior third baseman John Mullen (Walpole, Mass.) has been named captain for the upcoming 2015 season.

Mullen will be the lone captain of a Bulldog team that is in search of its third-straight Northeast Conference tournament title this spring. He was one of four captains on last year's team that won 42 games and advanced to the NCAA tournament.

"We are very pleased to have John as the captain of our 2015 baseball team," Owens said. "He has a tremendous amount of playing experience and possesses all of the positive traits that are necessary to provide effective leadership to our team. We trust him and so do our players."

A three-year starter for the Black and Gold, Mullen has proven himself to be one of the most clutch hitters in program history. He has contributed a key hit in each of Bryant's two NCAA tournament appearances, with his RBI triple adding a huge insurance run in the Bulldogs' victory over Arkansas in 2013. Last spring, he delivered a game-tying single in the top of the ninth against Houston.

For his career, Mullen has appeared in 160 games and has collected 168 hits, 38 doubles, 10 home runs, 118 RBI and has scored 91 runs. Last season, he hit a career-high .308 and drove in over 30 runs for the third-straight season. With nine more runs, Mullen will become just the fourth player in Division I history to record over 100 RBI and 100 runs scored in a career.

The Bulldogs open the 2015 season on Friday, Feb. 20 when they travel to San Antonio, Texas, for a three-game series with UT San Antonio.
