Baseball opens Black and Gold World Series

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Team Black grabbed an early 8-2 lead as the Bryant University baseball team opened its annual Black and Gold Fall World Series on Tuesday afternoon at Conaty Park.

The Bulldogs played five innings in what was the first of a three-day world series to wrap up the fall season.

Sophomore Ryan Johnson (East Falmouth, Mass.) earned the win for Black, tossing three innings of one-run ball. He allowed just one hit, walked three and struck out three on the day. Freshman Nathan Wrighter followed with two no-hit innings to close the door. He walked three and struck out one.

Offensively, senior Buck McCarthy (Saugus, Mass.) went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and two RBI for Black. Classmate Zach Wood (Griswold, Conn.) added a hit and three walks and junior Joseph Paparelli (Preston, Conn.) finished 3-for-3.

For Gold, sophomore Ross Weiner (Woodbridge, Conn.) started and allowed two earned runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three. Junior Cole Fabio (Mahwah, N.J.) singled, walked twice and stole two bases.
