Bingel (Pirates), Rinn (Royals) drafted on Saturday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After helping the Bryant University baseball team to a school-record 47 wins and its third Northeast Conference title in four years, junior pitcher Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass.) and senior first baseman Robby Rinn (Warwick, R.I.) were all selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Saturday.

Bingel, Rinn and join junior Matt Albanese (East Haddam, Conn.), who was drafted on Friday, to give the Bulldogs three draft picks this year. Bingel was selected in the 22nd round (675th overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates) and Rinn was selected in the 25th round (763rd overall). Bryant has now had 12 players drafted in the past four years and 16 in program history. Ten of the 12 were members of the 2013 Bryant team that won 45 games and an NCAA Tournament game.

A two-way player all three years, the Pirates drafted Bingel as a pitcher after a breakout junior season. He bumped up his velocity and showed an outstanding breaking ball on the way to a 9-4 record and a 3.77 ERA. Bingel allowed 76 hits, walked 31 and struck out 64 in 74 innings this spring. He made 14 starts and combined on two shutouts, including a 2-0 blanking of Maryland in which he threw six shutout innings. Bingel also tossed 5 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball against Sacred Heart in the regular season and then pitched 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball against the Pioneers to push the Bulldogs into the NEC Championship Round. He finishes his career with a 15-8 record and a 3.84 ERA.

Rinn, the NEC and New England Player of the Year, put together a monster senior season for the Bulldogs this spring. He hit .373 with 87 hits, 25 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 63 RBI, 54 runs scored and 138 total bases. Rinn posted a .592 slugging percentage, a .438 OBP and struck out just 17 times in 233 at-bats. He earned First Team All-NEC honors at first base for the third-straight year this spring and wraps up his career with 259 hits, 66 doubles, eight triples, 15 home runs, 168 RBI, 158 runs scored, 95 walks and a career .327 average. Defensively, he finishes with 1,901 chances, 1,719 putouts, 161 assists and a .989 career fielding percentage.
