Angelini's big day helps Black to early lead in Black and Gold World Series

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Nick Angelini (Bedford, N.H.) had three hits, drove in two runs, scored twice and stole two bases as Team Black earned a 7-3 victory on day one of the Bryant University baseball Black and Gold World Series Friday afternoon at Conaty Park.

GAME INFORMATION

Black 7, Gold 3

Location: Conaty Park (Smithfield, R.I.)

COACH OWENS'S COMMENTS

"I was pleased with several things that happened on the field today. There were some good plays, some quality at-bats, and some excellent pitches thrown. The energy was good from the guys. We will finish the fall team segment tomorrow and we look forward to watching the players compete."

KEY MOMENT

  • Leading 1-0 in the fourth, Black erupted for five runs to put the game out of reach. Two runs came home on errors, while Angelini contributed a two-run double down the third base line.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Angelini opened the bottom of the third with a sharp single through the right side. He quickly stole second, advanced to third on a sac bunt from sophomore Bryan Hart (Franklin, Mass.) and scored on a wild pitch to give Black a 1-0 lead.
  • Black eventually loaded the bases in the inning but due to pitch count limits and B&G World Series rules, it was rolled over to the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, an infield error scored the first run and an errant throw brought home a second run. Angelini then doubled home a pair, stole third and scored on a sac fly.
  • Gold finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits. Redshirt freshman Ryan Ward (Millbury, Mass.) broke up the no-hitter with a bloop single to right center, loading the bases with one out. After a strikeout, freshman Sam Owens (Scituate, R.I.) cleared the bases with a triple to left center.
  • Black added its final run in the bottom of the sixth. Angelini doubled and came around to score on a sac fly from sophomore Jimmy Titus (Stafford, Conn.).

STATS

  • The pitching trio of junior Craig Lacey (Westfield, Mass.), sophomore Jack Ipsen (Eatontown, N.J.) and redshirt sophomore Jack Owens (Scituate, R.I.) combined to allow three runs on just two hits over six innings.
  • Lacey started and tossed three scoreless frames. He retired the final seven batters he faced.
  • Ipsen followed with two perfect innings of relief.
  • Freshman Will Treuel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) started for Gold and allowed four runs over three innings.
  • Redshirt freshman Nash Eppard (Essex, Conn.) allowed two runs over two innings of relief.
  • Angelini finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

GAME NOTES

  • In addition to the score, the Black and Gold World Series also features 'skins'. Win the inning, win a skin.
  • Black won three skins when it scored in the bottom of the third. It added a fourth with its five-run fourth inning.
  • Gold picked up two skins after winning the sixth inning.
  • Black finished the day with a 9-2 lead in skins after earning the five that come with winning the game.
