Panno homers but Bulldogs fall to Arizona, 5-1

TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior Tyler Panno (Rivervale, N.J.) hit his first home run of the season but the University of Arizona completed a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader with a 5-1 victory in game two at Hi Corbett Field.

Panno's solo home run was the second of his career and brought Bryant within two runs in the sixth. He's now hit home runs at Arkansas and Arizona in his career.

"I thought that Jack Patterson gave us an excellent start. I was really please with how he threw the ball. He had a very good fastball and plus command of his secondary stuff. We had too many non-competitive at-bats with runners on base. We had some really good at-bats from Ciliento and Panno to get things going but we were unable to get runners across. That's pretty much the story of the day. "

KEY MOMENT

• Arizona capitalized on Bryant miscues to score three runs in a decisive third inning. After senior Jack Patterson (Suffield, Conn.) recorded the first out, he hit a batter and then threw low to first on a bunt single to put runners on the corners. A safety squeeze turned into an RBI single and was followed by another run-scoring single to make it 2-0. The final run of the inning scored as Mitchell Morimoto took second on a wild pitch and then came around to score as the throw went by the center fielder.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Bryant couldn't take advantage of some early opportunities, leaving six men on over the first four innings. The Bulldogs stranded two runners in the first, two more in the second and two in the fourth.
• Arizona scored its first three runs in the third inning. Cal Stevenson and Mitchell Morimoto delivered run-scoring singles, while Morimoto scored the final run on a wild throw to center.
• The Bulldogs pushed across their first run of the season with one swing of the bat in the sixth. After hammering a pitch foul down the right field line, Panno crushed the very next pitch off the top of the batters eye in center field to make it 3-1.
• Arizona quickly got the run back in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Benson doubled, Cam Cannon singled and Cesar Salazar made it 4-1 with a sac fly to left.
• The Wildcats added an insurance run in the seventh as Stevenson tripled and scored on a sac fly.
• Bryant had one final chance in the eighth as sophomore Jimmy Titus (Stafford, Conn.) and Panno singled to put two on. Arizona reliever Robby Medell ended the threat by retiring the next two batters.

STATS

• The Bulldogs finished the game 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners.
• Patterson suffered his first loss of the year, surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out three.
• Panno went 3-for-4 with a home run on the day.
• Titus reached twice with a hit and a walk.
• Sophomore James Ciliento (Mahwah, N.J.) had two hits and was hit by a pitch, reaching safely three times.
• Classmate Gaby Cruz (Miami, Fla.) started at DH and collected a hit and a walk.
• Freshman Tyler Mattison (Fort Ann, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut, allowing two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
• Sophomore Jack Ipsen (Eatontown, N.J.) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out two.
• Arizona's Michael Flynn allowed three hits and struck out five over 5 1/3 scoreless innings.
• Stevenson had three hits, including two triples, to pace the Wildcat offense.

GAME NOTES

• Bryant falls to 0-2 against Arizona and 0-6 against the Pac-12 at the Division I level.
• Patterson's loss was his first since April 29, 2015.
• Panno's two career home runs have come at Arkansas and Arizona.
• Panno tied a career high with his third-career three-hit day. He now has 12 career multi-hit games.
• Ciliento registered his eighth-career two-hit game and the ninth multi-hit game of his career.
• Ciliento registered three hits and reached base safely five times in two games on Saturday.
