Theetge, Owens earn weekly honors from NEC

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball duo of junior Steve Theetge (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Sam Owens (Scituate, R.I.) picked up weekly honors from the Northeast Conference on Monday afternoon.

Theetge was named the NEC Pitcher of the Week, while Owens earned NEC Rookie of the Week laurels. It is the third career pitcher of the week honor for Theetge, while Owens picks up his first-career honor.

Facing Arizona on opening day, Theetge turned in a dominant start for the Black and Gold. He tied a career-high with seven innings pitched and allowed an unearned run on just two hits. Theetge struck out one, didn't walk a batter and threw just 71 pitches. He retired 11-straight batters at one point and his seven-inning start was the longest by a Bryant starter on opening day since Eric Polvani went the distance in the 2010 opener.

Owens shined in his first-career start in the series finale on Sunday. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double as the starting shortstop. With runners on second and third in the second inning, Owens laced a 2-0 pitch into right field for his first-career hit and RBI. He later added his first-career extra-base hit with a one-out double in the fifth.

In addition to the two major honors, sophomore James Ciliento (Mahwah, N.J.) was named an NEC Prime Performer. He went 5-for-10 and posted a .583 OBP in the series against Arizona. Ciliento recorded a hit in all three games, posting multiple hits in each of the final two games. He's now reached safely in each of his last 10 games dating back to last season.
