Baseball heads to URI, BC for midweek contests

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team begins a busy week with midweek games at Rhode Island and Boston College on Tuesday and Wednesday.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Kingston, while Wednesday's first pitch will be at 4:00 p.m. in Brighton, Massachusetts.

Pitching Probables

Senior Ross Weiner (Woodbridge, Conn.) will make his first start of the year on Tuesday afternoon at Rhode Island. Weiner has made 10 appearances out of the bullpen this season and has allowed just nine hits in 13 innings. He'll be making his 10th career start.

Jake Walker will face Bryant on Tuesday in Kingston. The lefty pitched in relief three times against Bryant last year. He went 1-1 in his three appearances, earning the win in the third meeting with the Black and Gold.

Series History with URI

  • Bryant holds a 9-5 lead in the Division I series with the Rams.
  • The Bulldogs won two of the three meetings with URI last season, winning both games at home.
  • URI won the final game last year, 6-5 in 12 innings.

Series History with Boston College

  • Bryant and Boston College will be meeting for the second time this season. The Eagles own a 7-4 lead in the Division I series.
  • The Bulldogs earned a 9-8 walk-off victory over the Eagles in Cary, North Carolina, on March 3.
  • Sophomore Gaby Cruz (Miami, Fla.) tied the game and redshirt freshman Ryan Ward (Millbury, Mass.) delivered a walk-off single to end it.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • The Bulldogs enter the midweek with a 22-15-1 overall record and an 11-2-1 mark in the month of April.
  • Bryant also enters with a 3-0-1 record in midweek contests.
  • The Black and Gold lead the NEC in batting average (.314), hits (418), runs (269), doubles (85), triples (15) and home runs (31).
  • Ward was named the NEC Rookie of the Week for the fourth-straight week on Monday. He has hit safely in 24-straight games and reached safely in 34-straight games.
  • Ward still ranks first nationally in hits per game and is in the top five nationally in total hits, doubles and total bases.
  • In addition to Ward, Bryant features the top four hitters in the NEC. Cruz ranks second with a .371 average, sophomore James Ciliento (Mahwah, N.J.) is third with a .369 average and senior Mickey Gasper (Merrimack, N.H.) is fourth with a .349 average.
  • Gasper now has 11 doubles, two triples, four home runs and a team-leading 40 runs scored.  

Scouting the Rams

  • Rhode Island comes into the week on a seven-game winning streak. The Rams swept Saint Joseph's in an A-10 series over the weekend.
  • The Rams are hitting just .220 as a team but the pitching staff has posted a 3.82 team ERA.
  • URI pitchers have struck out 308 and walked just 133 on the year.
  • Jackson Coutts is hitting .307 to lead the team, while he's tied with three others with 13 RBI.
  • Jordan Powell has 40 hits and 13 stolen bases.

Scouting the Eagles

  • BC enters the week with an overall record of 13-26. The Eagles were swept by Florida State over the weekend and face UMass Lowell on Tuesday.
  • The Eagles are hitting .248 as a team and have a 5.42 team ERA.
  • Chris Galland is hitting .331 with 26 stolen bases, while Jake Palomaki is hitting .329 with 13 doubles, 26 RBI and 15 stolen bases.
