Owens to be inducted into Greater Utica Sports HOF

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University baseball head coach Steve Owens will be inducted into the Greater Utica (N.Y.) Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, June 9.

A Sauquoit, New York native, Owens is one of eight members of the Class of 2019. He will be inducted on June 9 at Delta Hotels in Utica, New York.

Owens was a standout football and baseball player at Sauquoit Valley High School before playing collegiately at St. Lawrence University. He went on to play two seasons of professional baseball before getting his first head coaching gig at Cortland State.

In the 28 years that have followed, Owens has been one of the most successful coaches in the country, producing a record of 914-483-3. He has enjoyed 28-consecutive winning seasons and has compiled 20 30-win seasons, five 40-win seasons and 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. Owens is an 11-time conference coach of the year and has coached 20 All-Americans and 45 pro players.

Owens just completed his ninth season as the head coach of the Bryant Baseball program and has turned the Bulldogs into one of the premier programs in the Northeast. He is 327-184-2 in his time in Smithfield, with the 327 wins ranking first among programs in the Northeast since the 2011 season. Owens has produced seven 30-win seasons, four 40-win seasons, eight-consecutive Northeast Conference Regular-Season titles and 64 all-conference selections. His 327 wins are the second-most in program history.

Prior to his time at Bryant, Owens spent 11 seasons at Le Moyne College. He led the Dolphins to three NCAA Tournament berths and an overall record of 342-217. Owens went to Le Moyne after eight seasons as the head coach Cortland State. He took the Red Dragons to four NCAA Division III World Series and posted a 245-82-1 record.

Owens has previously been inducted into the St. Lawrence University Athletics Hall of Fame (Fall 2010) and the Cortland State Hall of Fame (Fall 2017).
