SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team opens its 2023 season on Friday, February 17 against High Point. BryantBulldogs.com previews the 2023 team leading up to Opening Day.

Position: Infielders
Returners: Jake Gustin, Tommy DiTullio, Carmine Petosa, Lewis Barnum, Zac Zyons
Newcomers: John Hosmer, Greg Gorman, Caden Dulin, Justin Hackett

The Breakdown

  • The infield will represent one of Bryant's most veteran groups and also one of its most youthful.
  • Jake Gustin returns for his fifth season in the Black and Gold and will anchor the infield at second base. The two-time All-NEC selection and former ABCA All-Northeast selection is one of the best left-handed hitters in all of New England. He's produced 171 hits in 141 career games, while clubbing 34 doubles, seven triples and 13 home runs.
  • Gustin also has speed, stealing 28 bases in his career.
  • Tommy DiTullio returns to his spot at short after spending the 2022 season at the hot corner. DiTullio has over 90 assists in each of the last two seasons and has fielded over .900 in all three of his collegiate seasons.
  • Over at first is All-NEC Second Team selection Carmine Petosa. The Wake Forest transfer fit in nicely last season, finishing the year with a .302/.443/.500 split. Petosa hit six home runs, drove in 23 and also walked 19 times.
  • Petosa had a slow start, going 6-for-41 but rebounded to go 32-for-85 the rest of the way.
  • At the hot corner, the Bulldogs will look to Davidson grad transfer John Hosmer to make an immediate impact. Hosmer appeared in 123 games (108 starts) at Davidson, collecting 26 doubles and 18 home runs.
  • Hosmer hit .251 with 17 doubles, eight home runs and 42 RBI last season, helping Davidson win 43 games. He hit 10 home runs in the 2021 season.
  • Bryant also welcomes back third-year veteran Lewis Barnum and sophomore Zac Zyons. Barnum saw time early last year before suffering an injury that cost him the rest of the year. He had a bounce-back summer in Worcester, hitting .305 with 17 extra-base hits, 25 RBI and 26 walks.
  • Zyons didn't play as a true freshman but had a strong summer in Norwich, hitting .277 with 13 stolen bases and 25 runs scored.
  • Bryant will also welcome a trio of freshmen on the infield in Greg Gorman, Caden Dulin and Justin Hackett
  • Gorman is a Westerly native that has shown impressive power at every level he's played at so far.
  • Dulin is one of the top impact freshmen in the America East according to the D1Baseball.com writers.
  • Hackett has also shined during the fall and winter after an impressive career at Lyman Hall in Wallingford, Conn.
