Jeter tosses seven shutout innings as Bryant downs Brown Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Chase Jeter tossed 7.0 scoreless innings to lead the Bryant University baseball team to a 10-1 victory over Brown on Friday afternoon at Murray Stadium.

With the win, the Bulldogs have now won five-straight games and are 6-7 overall on the year. Bryant has won each of the last seven meetings with the Bears.

Jeter shined in his third start of the year, limiting the Bears to four baserunners over 7.0 innings. He allowed four hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. Jeter retired each of the final nine batters he faced.

Offensively, Carmine Petosa (3-5, 2B, 2RBI) and Derek Smith (3-5, 2B, HR, 3RBI) each had three hits, while Jake Gustin (2-5, RBI) and Jackson Phinney (2-3, 2B, 2R) all finished with multiple hits on the afternoon. Lewis Barnum added a two-run single.

  • Phinney opened the fifth inning with a leadoff double and came around to score on a Gustin single to put Bryant ahead 1-0.

  • Both starting pitchers were settled in early on Friday, putting up zeroes for the first 4 1/2 innings.
  • Bryant broke through in the fifth as Phinney doubled to start the inning and came around to score on a Gustin single.
  • The Black and Gold extended their lead in the sixth. Dulin put runners on 2nd and 3rd with a double and Barnum singled to center to score both and make it 3-0.
  • Bryant then scored three times in the top of the seventh to make it 6-0. Gavin Noriega plated Zac Zyons with a fielder's choice for the first run. Two batters later, Petosa hit a bloop down the left field line that fell between three fielders, resulting in a two-run double.
  • In the eighth, Smith crushed a three-run home run to highlight a four-run inning. 
  • Brown plated its only run in the eighth with a two-out RBI double.
