Hosmer, Schaub homer twice as Bryant completes weekend sweep of NJIT

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – John Hosmer and Brian Schaub each homered twice as the Bryant University baseball team closed out a weekend sweep of NJIT with a 15-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Conaty Park.

With the win, Bryant swept its first-ever America East series. The Bulldogs are now 11-8 overall, having won 10 of their last 11.

Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs and six RBI, while Schaub went 3-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Carmine Petosa also homered and finished with four RBI, while Gavin Noriega went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Jackson Vanesko made his second start of the week and tossed 4.0 scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two.

How it Happened

  • Jake Gustin got the Bulldogs started with a double off the base of the wall in right-center. Petosa brought him home with a sac fly before four-straight hits produced three more runs. Hosmer doubled home Noriega, Dulin singled to score Hosmer and Jackson Phinney plated the final run with a single to left.
  • The Bulldogs then used the long ball to extend their lead to 10-0. In the second, Schaub hammered an opposite field home run to right for the 40th home run of his collegiate career.
  • In the third, Hosmer and Schaub each hit a two-run home run, both to right field, to give the Bulldogs a 9-0 lead.
  • Petosa added his second home run of the weekend, a laser over the right field wall, to make it 10-0 in the fourth.
  • Petosa made it 11-1 with a sac fly in the fifth.
  • Bryant expanded its lead with four runs in the seventh. Petosa drove in one with a single and Hosmer followed with a long three-run home run to deep right-center to make it 15-1.
