Bryant visits NJIT this weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team heads to New Jersey this weekend for a three-game series with NJIT. 

Bryant and NJIT will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 12:00 p.m. A third game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Probable Starting Pitchers (Based on last week)

Friday - Brett Wichrowski vs Ryan Fischer
Saturday - Coleman Picard vs Aidan Kidd
Sunday - Ken Turner vs Joe Georgini

  • Wichrowski turned in another solid outing for the Black and Gold last week, allowing one run on four hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven and has 16 strikeouts over his last 10.1 innings.
  • Picard returned to the mound last Friday after missing five starts. He was a little rusty in his return, allowing four runs on three hits in the first inning. 
  • Turner was also strong last week, allowing just one run on two hits over a season-high 5.2 innings. He struck out six. 
  • Fischer and Kidd were both dominant last week vs Binghamton, combining to allow just one run and strike out 18 in 13.0 innings, helping NJIT sweep a doubleheader.
  • Kidd leads the America East with 68 strikeouts. 

Bryant vs. NJIT

  • Bryant and NJIT are meeting for the second time this season. The Bulldogs swept a three-game series at Conaty Park to open America East play. 
  • Bryant won the opener 5-2 and Brian Schaub's three-run home run broke a 3-3 tie to give Bryant a 7-3 victory in game two. The Bulldogs swept the series with a 15-3 win in the finale. 
  • Schaub and John Hosmer each homered twice in the finale.  

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant enters the weekend at 20-16 overall and 9-6 in America East play. The Black and Gold are on a season-best seven-game winning streak. 
  • The Bulldogs rank fourth in the league in batting average and second with 50 home runs this season. Bryant has hit 25 home runs (first) in 15 league games. 
  • Bryant owns a 6.95 ERA in America East games. 
  • Derek Smith and Jake Gustin have both enjoyed the month of April. Smith is hitting .446 (29-65) with eight doubles, five home runs and 20 RBI in 15 games, while Gustin is hitting .406 (26-54) with four doubles, two triples, four home runs, 16 RBI and 22 runs scored.
  • Smith reached a pair of milestones on Tuesday vs Quinnipiac, setting a career-high with 14 doubles and reaching 100 career RBIs. 
  • Zac Zyons enjoyed a very nice homestand, going 6-or-12 with seven RBI, 11 runs scored and a .640 OBP. 
  • As a team, Bryant hit .328 and stole 18 bases in eight games at home. 
  • Mark Scamardella continues to be solid on the mound, having pitched in long relief the last two weekends. He struck out five over 2.2 innings of one-run relief vs UMBC and then allowed two runs over 4.0 innings of relief last week vs UAlbany.
  • Austin Wainer has also been strong out of the bullpen, allowing three runs (one earned) over his last three outings (6.1 innings).
