Bryant closes regular season with three-game series at Maine

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team wraps up its regular season this week with a three-game series at league-leader Maine. The series is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine.

Bryant and Maine have both qualified for the six-team America East Baseball Championships that will be held May 24-27 at Binghamton. The Black Bears have claimed a share of the regular season title, while the Black and Gold are looking to secure the No. 3 seed.

Probable Starting Pitchers 

Thursday - Coleman Picard vs. Colin Fitzgerald
Friday - Brett Wichrowski vs. Caleb Leys
Saturday - Ken Turner vs. Noah Lewis

  • Picard will be making his fifth start since returning to the rotation. In his last four, Picard has allowed one unearned run on six hits, walked five and struck out 15.
  • Wichrowski and Turner will both look to bounce back this week after short outings against Binghamton.
  • Fitzgerald and Lewis are both 6-1 on the year. Fitzgerald has allowed four runs or less in each of his last eight starts, while Lewis has punched out six or more in six starts.  

Bryant vs. Maine

  • Bryant holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series with Maine. The two teams met once in 2009 and then played a three-game series in 2012. 
  • The Bulldogs won both ends of a doubleheader to win the series in 2012.  

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant enters the weekend at 26-20 overall. The Bulldogs won two-of-three against Binghamton last weekend before earning a 20-8 win over Stonehill on Tuesday. 
  • Jake Gustin enters the weekend hitting .367 (3rd in the AE), 16 doubles (3rd in the AE), 44 RBI (4th) and 51 runs scored (4th). He leads the league in hits with 69. 
  • Derek Smith is enjoying a career year, posting career-highs in hits, doubles and home runs. He hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season on Tuesaday at Stonehill.
  • Carmine Petosa is heating up for Bryant, homering three times in the last two games. Over his last 14, Petosa is 19-for-51 with six home runs and 16 RBI.
  • Zac Zyons picked up three hits on Tuesday and is now hitting .440 (22-of-50) with nine extra-base hits, 17 RBI and 25 runs scored over his last 15 games.
  • Austin Wainer and Liam LeVangie have been good out of the bullpen the last three weeks. Wainer has allowed five runs (three earned) over his last 17.1 innings. He has walked five and struck out 17.
  • LeVangie has allowed one run over his last 8.0 innings (six appearances). 
  • Bryant enters the final weekend ranked first in the league in home runs (69) and second in scoring. The Bulldogs are also third in team ERA and first in strikeouts.
