Bryant welcomes Binghamton to Conaty Park for America East series

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant baseball team begins a seven-game homestand this weekend as it welcomes Binghamton to Conaty Park for a three-game America East series. First pitch for the series is Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

This weekend's series pits the league-leading Bulldogs against the preseason favorite Bearcats. Binghamton has won five America East titles since 2019, most recently in 2022.

Probable Starting Pitchers 

Game 1 - Austin Wainer vs Ryan Lumpinski

  • Bryant will trot out the same rotation for the ninth consecutive weekend. The trio has helped Bryant go 14-1 in the last five series.
  • Wainer picked up his first win of the season with a career-high 7.0 innings last Saturday vs UAlbany. He is 1-0 with a 3.32 ERA in three AE starts. Wainer has pitched into the seventh in all three of those starts.
  • Delongchamp has posted three-straight strong starts to open league play, allowing just one run on 12 hits over 15.0 innings. He has struck out 16 without issuing a walk. Delongchamp leads the league with a 2.73 ERA and has 33 strikeouts and just three walks in 33.0 innings.
  • Horvat has thrown 23.0 innings in his first three league starts, posting a 1.17 ERA. He has thrown at least 7.0 innings in each of his last four starts and owns a 3.53 ERA in a staff-best 43.1 innings.
  • John Lumpinski will get the ball on Friday after starting the series finale vs UMass Lowell. It will be his second start of the season. He allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in 3.0 innings.
  • Berkwich is a transfer from UNC that is 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA. He has struck out 41 and walked 16 in 38.2 innings. 

Bryant vs. Binghamton

  • Bryant and Binghamton split six regular-season meetings last season. It was the first six games between the two programs. 
  • Binghamton took 2-of-3 in Vestal, while Bryant won 2-of-3 in Smithfield. 
  • In Smithfield, the Bulldogs opened the series with a wild 9-8 victory in 13 innings. Bryant trailed in the bottom of the 12th with two outs when the sprinkler system turned on. After a 10-minute break, Bryant hit back-to-back homers to tie the game. The sprinklers went back on and forced the game to be halted until Saturday. Bryant was able to walk-off on a Matt Smith single.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant enters the weekend 19-11 overall and 8-1 in America East play. The Bulldogs are 18-4 since starting the year 1-7. The Black and Gold fell to UConn, 12-1, on Tuesday.
  • The Bulldogs are 8-3 in one-run games this season. Bryant had a string of six-straight one-run games snapped in the series finale vs UMBC.
  • In America East play, Bryant is hitting .261 and owns a 3.53 team ERA. The Bulldogs have hit a league-best 16 home runs in nine league games and lead the league with 39 homers overall.
  • Carmine Petosa has reached safely in all 30 games this season and his on-base streak sits at 33 dating back to last year. The streak is the longest by a Bulldog since Jake Gustin reached safely in 33-straight spanning the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Petosa is hitting .255 with four home runs, 24 RBI, 27 walks and a .444 OBP.
  • Brandyn Durand has reached safely in 14 straight games and is hitting .263 with five doubles, five home runs and nine stolen bases.
  • Gavin Noriega leads the team in home runs (10), RBI (28), runs scored (32) and OBP (.479). Noriega ranks fourth in the AE in average, 2nd in slugging, 3rd in OBP, 1st in OPS, 1st in runs scored, 3rd in RBI and 3rd in homers. 
  • Jared Burrows enters the weekend tied for the team lead with three wins. He is 3-3 with one save and a 1.72 ERA in 12 appearances. Burrows is allowing a .213 batting average.
  • Zach Nichols leads the league with six saves.

Scouting the Bearcats

  • Binghamton is 13-15 overall and 3-6 in America East play. The Bearcats were picked first in the preseason poll. 
  • Binghamton has faced NJIT (won 2-of-3), UMBC (lost all three) and UMass Lowell (lost 2-of-3) in league play.
  • The Bearcats lead the AE in batting average, hitting .274 with 53 doubles and 27 home runs. 
  • Binghamton pitchers rank first in the league in fewest walks allowed and rank second in strikeouts.
  • Mike Gunning leads the league with 12 homers and is hitting .330 with 31 RBI and 25 runs scored.
  • Evin Sullivan (.327) and Logan Haskell (.315) are both hitting over .300, while Nick Roselli returned from injury last week and is hitting .474 with a pair of homers.
