Hancocks lead Bulldogs to third-straight win

FIELD HOCKEY TOPS HARVARD, 2-1, SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN CAMBRIDGE, MASS.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – On the heels of terrific performances from the Hancock triplets, the Bryant University field hockey team earned a 2-1 victory over Harvard, Sunday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.

With their third-straight victory, the Bulldogs currently sit at an impressive 3-1 overall mark, while Harvard is off two a tough start, dropping its first two contests of 2013.

After a quick score from Harvard's Sarah Finnemore less than three minutes into Sunday's contest, the Bulldogs responded in the form of a goal from senior defender MaKayla Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) in the 28th minute. The senior's first-career goal came on an assist from her sister, senior forward Mallory Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine), knotting the game, 1-1, heading into halftime.

Out of the break, both teams remained gridlocked until Mallory Hancock put away her first tally of the 2013 season off a helper from classmate Olivia Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) at the 54 minute mark, putting the Bulldogs up, 2-1.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) handled the rest, as the veteran netminder stopped seven Crimson shots en route to her third-straight victory of the season. Harvard's Jenn Hatfield made four saves, allowing the pair of goals in her second loss of the year.

Unbeaten during the month of September, the Black and Gold are two games above .500 for the first time in their Division I history. Looking ahead, Bryant will have seven days to prepare before making the trip to UMass-Lowell on Sunday, Sept. 15. UMass-Lowell is currently in their first season of the transition process to become a full Division I institution (a process Bryant completed just two years ago.)
