Bears' last minute goal leads to Bulldogs' loss in overtime Saturday afternoon

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team fell to Brown, 3-2, in overtime Saturday afternoon in Providence.

With the Bulldogs (1-5) leading by one, the Bears (2-1) pulled their keeper in the last few minutes of regulation in an attempt to keep the game alive. The strategy paid off, when Hannah Rogers went unassisted in the last 14 seconds, tying the match for the Bears and sending the game into overtime.

Brown was first on the board, after Katarina Angus found the back of the cage off a penalty corner.  Anna Masini passed to Emily Arciero, who set up Angus for the score.

Junior Victoria Danby (Lancaster, Mass.) added another score to her six-goal season tally, finding her first of the day in the 33rd minute. Classmate Elena Borovskis (Pequannock, N.J.) sent a pass into the circle and Danby was there to make an athletic play on the loose ball, diving to finish it into the bottom right corner.

Danby also tallied an assist in the 61st minute settling the ball for senior Bronwyn Walton (North Vancouver, B.C.) off a penalty corner from Erin Karcher (Kennet Square, Pa.).

After the match was sent into overtime, the Bears sealed the victory in the opening minute of extra time, when Lucy Green found Rogers for the one-timer in front of the cage.

Freshman goalie Marissa Elizardo (North Wales, Pa.) finished with seven saves off ten opponent shots, while Bears' keeper Katie Hammaker allowed two goals off four Bryant attempts.

The Bulldogs travel to Hartford, Conn. to take on Yale on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
