Bulldogs top Brown, 4-3 in Providence

Providence, R.I. – Joppe de Vries won his first game as a head coach as the Bryant University field hockey team topped Brown, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field in Providence. The Bulldogs had three different players score goals, with freshman Alex Neumann (Auckland, New Zealand) scoring two including the game-winning score in the 54th minute.

COACH DE VRIES' COMMENTS

"It's always nice to get a win," said de Vries. "At half time, I just reiterated what I wanted to have happen: get it, give it and go. We put pressure on the ball, intercepted the ball and I think our girls worked so hard. I'm proud of my girls. I'm glad we got a couple goals in after a tough stretch, and now we're ready for Providence."

KEY MOMENT

Neumann scored just 61 seconds into the second half to tie the contest at two. Just over five minutes later, junior Emily Perryman (Lebanon, New Hampshire) scored her first goal of the season to give Bryant a 3-2 lead that the Bulldogs would not surrender.

• 11th minute – Bryant 0, Brown 1 – Brown's Ellie Seid scored when Ali Dunning fed her a pass in front of the cage.
• 12th minute – Bryant 0, Brown 2 – Anagha Nayak scored a goal off of a rebounded shot from close range to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
• 34th minute – Bryant 1, Brown 2 – Bryant junior Victoria Newbill (Wilton, Maine) scored a goal after re-directing a pass from Ally Burdick (Cambridge, New York) to put Bryant on the board.
• 37th minute – Bryant 2, Brown 2 – Newman's goal was rifled past Brown goalkeeper Allee Ayles.
• 42nd minute – Bryant 3, Brown 2 – Perryman caused a turnover in front of the Brown goal and scored from in front of the net.
• 54th minute – Bryant 4, Brown 2 – Neumann collected a rebounded shot off the pads of Ayles, firing into the far side of the goal for what ended up being the game-winning score.
• 70th minute – Bryant 4, Brown 3 – With 30 seconds left, Brown's Gina Openshaw scored on a corner that was inserted by Dunning.

STATS/NOTES

• The win served as the first of the season for the Bulldogs, but also the first of Bryant head coach Joppe de Vries' career. He previously was the assistant and associate head coach at Maryland for four seasons.
• The win gave the Bulldogs their first over Brown since 2013 when Bryant won by the same 4-3 score.
• The Bulldogs overcame a two-goal deficit to score four unanswered goals. It was the largest deficit that Bryant overcame to win since Sept. 15, 2013, when the Bulldogs came back from trailing 3-0 to top UMass Lowell, 4-3.

The Bulldogs return to Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host the Providence Friars. The game will be played at Golberger Family Field in Providence. The game will serve as the home opener for the Bulldogs.
