Bryant meets with Brown and Providence in weekend play

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team will play two games this weekend in the Ocean State as they take the short trip to Brown on Friday and Providence on Sunday.  

The Particulars

Series History

  • Friday's meeting will be the tenth all-time between Brown and Bryant. Brown currently holds the all-time series record over Bryant, 5-4.
  • Bryant defeated Brown last year 4-3 in their first season win with a game-winning goal from Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.).

A bit about the Bears

  • This will be Brown's first game of the season as they went 1-16 last season with a win over Siena.
  • Brown returns two of their leading goal scorers from last season. Rachel Lanouette and Anagha Nayak each had five goals and an assist, totaling 11 points on the season.
  • Katie Hammaker will likely be back in goal for the Bears as she played and started in all 17 games last season. Hammaker tallied a total of 144 saves on the year with a save percentage of .688.
  • Jill Reeve will be returning to lead the Bears for her eighth season.

Series History

  • This will be the third meeting between the two teams with Providence winning both of the previous games.
  • Last season the Friars topped the Bulldogs, 3-2.

A bit about the Friars

  • The Friars will be coming into the weekend 0-3 after returning from California where they were topped by the California Golden Bears in their season opener. Before returning to the east coast, the Friars were defeated by UC Davis and Pacific.
  • Mikayla Michals leads the Friars in goals, scoring two so far on the season.
  • The Friars show two goal keepers who have interchanged during the past three games. Lydia Rice started the first and third game against California and Pacific recording 11 saves so far on the season, while Cassie Kincaid was in the cage against UC Davis tallying three saves on the day.
  •  The Friars are led by Head Coach Diane Madl who is in her 17th season with the Friars.

Bryant Notes and Notables

  • Senior Leyna DiMarco (Glastonbury, Conn.) leads the Bulldogs in goals by scoring the first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to VCU. This was DiMarco's second goal of her career assisted by Perryman and Victoria Newbill (Wilton, Maine).
  • Freshman Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) made nine saves in the VCU game which brings her to a total of 13 saves so far on the year. Currently, Jaarsma is tied for seventh nationally for saves per game.
  • With a win over Brown, the Bulldogs will earn their first August win since 2012, when they beat Colgate 3-2.
