HEMPTSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior Clare Luttrell's (Freehold, N.J.) first goal of the season was the difference as the Bryant University field hockey team defeated Hofstra, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. The victory was the Bulldog's first of the season. 

Records: Hofstra 1-5, Bryant 1-5

Coach de Vries' Comments

"In the first half, we played really well by concentrating and being organized. In the second half, we had a lot of pressure and I have to compliment our corner defense due to all of the corners against and how we were really able to hold our own. From where we were two weeks ago to now, I am very satisfied."  

Key Moment

In the 18th minute of play, the Bulldogs withheld possession inside the arc in front of Hofstra's goal. The ball was poked loose by the Hofstra defense and both teams scrambled to regain possession. With Hofstra's goalie Betty Bosma on the ground, Luttrell was able to find the ball and score for the lone goal of the game.

  • 18' – Bryant 1, Hofstra 0 – The ball was poked loose and both teams were scrambling for possession in front of Hofstra's goal. During the chaotic play, Luttrell was able to get her stick on the ball to give the Bulldogs the lead that they would not surrender.   

Stats/Notes

  • The Pride took 17 penalty corners, compared to Bryant's two, and outshot the Bulldogs 24-5. Hofstra was unable to capitalize against the Bulldog defense led by Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) who denied seven shots to keep the Pride scoreless throughout the entire 70 minutes. With the win today, Jaarsma posts her first career shutout.
  • Luttrell scored her first goal of the season, which gives her two points so far on the year. Luttrell has a total of two goals in her career scoring against LIU Brooklyn last season.
  • Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.), Pia Klupp (Hamburg, Germany), and Ally Burdick (Cambridge, N.Y.) also put shots on frame for the Bulldogs.
  • The last time Bryant posted a shutout was last season in a 1-0 win over Rider.
