Bulldogs head to Albany and Colgate in weekend play

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Coming off of its first win of the season, the Bryant University field hockey team will be traveling to New York this weekend to meet with the University of Albany on Friday and Colgate on Sunday.

Series History

  • Friday's meeting will be the fifth meeting between the two teams. Albany currently leads the Bulldogs, 4-0.
  • The Bulldogs have never scored a goal against the Great Danes as Bryant has been outscored, 19-0. Bryant last met Albany in 2016 when the Danes shutout the Bulldogs, 5-0. 

A bit about the Great Danes

  • Albany is currently 2-2 as they head into the weekend, most recently being topped by Boston College, 1-0.
  • Sophomore Ghislaine Beerkens currently leads the Great Danes in points tallying seven with three goals and an assist. Beerkens last goal came in Albany's 5-1 win over Sacred Heart. 
  • Albany is ranked first in the country for penalty corners per game, averaging 9.25. The Danes had a season-high of 10 penalty corners in their win over the Pioneers on Saturday.
  • Melissa Nealon has played and started all four games in the cage and ranks top in the America East Conference for goals against only allowing three on the season. Nealon has made 12 saves so far and has a save percentage of .800.
  • Head Coach Phil Sykes enters his 14th season leading the Great Danes.

Series History

  • This will be the 11th meeting between Colgate and Bryant as the two teams have met every season since Bryant moved to Division I in 2008.
  • The Bulldogs lead the all-time series, 7-3, topping the Raiders, 3-1, last season.

A bit about the Raiders

  • The Raiders enter the weekend, 2-3, and will take on Bucknell on Saturday prior to meeting the Bulldogs on Sunday. Colgate started it's season off strong winning it's first two games, but have since gone on a three-game losing streak. Colgate squared off with Albany last Saturday and was topped, 5-0, by the Great Danes.
  • Nora Mulroy leads the Raiders with three goals, totaling to six points. Mulroy's last goal occurred in the Raiders' 6-1 loss to Lock Haven last Sunday.
  • Anna Ungler is the main goalkeeper for the Raiders posting 24 saves with a save percentage of .686.
  • April Cornell leads the Raiders in her second season as head coach. 

Bryant Notes and Notables

  • The Bulldogs are going into the weekend coming off of their first win over Hofstra. Junior Clare Luttrell (Freehold, N.J.) scored the lone Bryant goal tallying her first goal on the season.
  • Senior Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) leads the Bulldogs with seven points scoring two goals and adding an assist. Her last goal was scored in the 3-2 Bulldog loss to Drexel. Fellow senior Leyna DiMarco (Glastonbury, Conn.) also added a goal against the Dragons and leads the Bulldogs in goals alongside Perryman.
  • Freshman Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) recorded her first career shutout on Sunday against Hofstra. The rookie has played 350 minutes in the cage and has a .761 save percentage as a result.
