Columbia tops Bryant in overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team was topped by Columbia in an overtime thriller, 2-1, Sunday afternoon.

Coach de Vries' Comments

"We put a lot of emphasis on how we played in the first half against UNH and what went wrong, so we came up with the fact that we have to be united and communicate. We are not suddenly different players we're just a better group right now. I'm excited with how they bounced back after Friday and I think we took big steps because this is a tough opponent. It's exciting to go into overtime because it's not something we see very often so congratulations to Columbia."

Key Moment

Within the first two minutes of overtime, Columbia played the ball into the circle for Jennifer Trieschman. She fired the ball from mid-circle and the ball went right between the legs of Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) to end the game.

Scoring Summary

• 45' – Bryant 1, Columbia 0 – Freshman Eva Bazen (The Hague, Netherlands) was fouled hard in the circle by the Lion's keeper during a breakaway play. The foul was immediately called and the Bulldogs were granted a penalty stroke. Brittany Gouws (Cape Town, South Africa) took the stroke and put it away in the top right corner of the cage.
• 51' – Columbia 1, Bryant 1 – Off of a penalty corner, Brooke Gasser shot the ball from the top of the circle but it was blocked by a Bryant defender. The ball was knocked around from stick to stick before Kelsey Farkas tapped the ball in to tie the game.
• 72' – Columbia 2, Bryant 1 – Trieschman received the ball in the middle of the circle and was able to get a shot off. The shot went past Jaarsma for the game-winning goal.  

Stats/Notes

• Jaarsma played the entire game in the cage for the Bulldogs and tallied seven saves.
• Six different Bryant players took chances for a goal. Gouws, along with Ally Burdick (Cambridge, N.Y.) and Kylie Nelson (Searsmont, Maine), each put a shot on frame.
• Gouws scored her first career goal off of a penalty stroke.
• Four players were given green cards during the game including two Bulldogs, Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) and Pia Klupp (Hamburg, Germany).
