Bryant opens 2019 season at Lock Haven

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team opens the 2019 season this Friday, Aug. 30 in the Keystone State as the Bulldogs take on Lock Haven at 3 p.m.

Series History
The two teams met just once in program history back in 2009 when the Bald Eagles topped the Bulldogs, 2-0, in the Ocean State.

A bit about the Bald Eagles

  • Lock Haven finished with an overall mark of 9-9 and a 3-5 record in A-10 play during the 2018 season.
  • The Bald Eagles were picked to finish 5th in the ten-team conference in the 2019 Preseason Poll.
  • LHU graduated both All-Conference selections from a year ago but return junior Kayla Brathwaite who was selected to the A-10 2019 Preseason All-Conference Team. Brathwaite tallied two goals and eight assists last year.
  • On the defensive side, the Bald Eagles posted seven shutouts in 2018 as they return five defenders. Lock Haven graduated its primary goalkeeper from last season but return Joaquina Orlandi who appeared in six games between the posts.
  • Head Coach Pat Rudy returns for her 24th season as the leader of the Bald Eagles after achieving her 600th win last season. She was also inducted into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Hall of Fame in 2018.

Bryant Notes and Notables

  • The Bulldogs finished the 2018 season with a 3-15 overall record and a 1-4 mark in MAAC play.
  • Bryant's leading goal scorer Ally Burdick (Cambridge, N.Y.) returns for the Black and Gold after netting three goals last season.
  • Also returning for Bryant is sophomore goalkeeper Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands). Jaarsma was among the top ten in the country for both save percentage (.770) and saves per game (7.47) helping her earn three MAAC Rookie of the Week honors.
  • Seniors Clare Luttrell (Freehold, N.J.) and Freya Ward (Sussex, England) return for the Bulldogs as the lone seniors of the group combining for five points last season.
  • Joppe de Vries leads the Bulldogs in his third season as head coach.
