Bulldogs drop America East opener to Vermont, 2-1

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Lotte Guitink's fifth goal of the season gave the Bryant University field hockey team a 1-0 lead at the half but the University of Vermont was able to twice in the second half to edge the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon.

Bryant was playing its first America East game and was looking for its first win over Vermont since 2015.

KEY MOMENT

  • The Catamounts were able to break a 1-1 tie with 6:01 remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After struggling to find any consistent offense in the first quarter, Bryant capitalized on its first chance in the second quarter. Valerie van Dommelen inserted the penalty corner to Brittany Gouws and Guitink fired a shot towards the cage. The ball deflected on its way in and found the back of the next.

Bryant held a 1-0 edge until the Catamounts tied the game with just over three minutes in the third quarter. UVM was able to create an odd-man situation and the pass across the front of the cage was deflected home.

The Catamounts then scored the game-winning goal in similar fashion. Meg Weyer slid a pass across the cage and Reggie Hillery was there on the back door to redirect it home.
