Sweitzer paces Bulldogs, ties for 4th overall

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior standout Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) shot a two-round 143 at the weekend's season-opening Blue Devil Fall Invitational, leading the Bryant University golf team to an eighth-place finish while finishing tied for fourth overall Sept. 9-10 in New Britain, Conn.

Sweitzer's day-two 70 tied for the second-lowest score of the day and third-lowest of the tournament and accounted for the senior's jump up 11 places after ending Friday action tied for 15th (35-28=73) overall. He would finish just one stroke over par at 143 on the weekend and one stroke behind eventual winner Daniel Morgan.

Two other Bulldogs, rookie Connor McGovern (South Darien, Conn.) and senior Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) saw their rankings jump up after Saturday's final round as well, both skipping two places after carding a 75 and 86, respectively. McGovern would finish the invitational tied with teammate Samuel Russell (Southborough, Mass.) for 35th overall (155) while Certuse would tie for 51st in the 60-golfer field. Sophomore Zach Garbacik (Hadley, Mass.) used rounds of 82 and 81 to tie for 49th with a two-day total of 163.

As a team, the Bulldogs would finish both days eighth on the depth chart, carding a 308 Friday and a 304 Saturday to beat ninth-place Hofstra University by four strokes in the 12-team field. Laval University took the Blue Devil Fall Invitational title with a two-day total of 572 (+4). Central Connecticut's Morgan won a three-way playoff to take the individual tournament championship with a two-day score of 142.

Bryant returns to action on the course Sept. 18-20 at Newport National Country Club for the Adams Cup, hosted by URI.
