Bulldogs finish 19th at Adams Cup

SMITHFIELD R.I. -- Freshman Conor McGovern (South Darien, Conn.) shot a round-three 72 to lead the Bryant University golf team Tuesday, as the Bulldogs closed out the Adams Cup of Newport hosted by URI in 19th place at Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, R.I.

The Adams Cup moved to Carnegie for the final round after two frames at Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I. on Monday, and McGovern's one over par day in Portsmouth was the best round of his young collegiate career. The rookie finished the tournament with a team-best three-round 227 (+12), placing him tied for 51st overall in the field of 95. McGovern improved another two strokes over his round-two score, making a nine-stroke jump over the three-round, two-day event.

As for the other Bulldogs, senior Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) shot a third-round 76 to finish at 233 (+18) for all three laps, placing him tied for 71st overall, while Samuel Russell (Southborough, Mass.) shot a 239 after a day-two 79, putting him in a tie for 85th. Sophomore Zach Garbacik (Hadley, Mass.) took 88th after a final round 82 (241 total), and senior Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) shot a three-round 244 (+29) to place tied for 91st.

McGovern's 72 was the best round for any Bulldog in the tournament. As a team, Bryant finished strong with a final round of 307, putting them at a three-round total of 938 (+78) to finish 19th in the field.

UCF would take the team title with a Tuesday score of 275, tying for the best team round of the Adams Cup and finishing with a three-round score of 842 (-18). UCF beat out Monday's leader and second-place Georgia by nine strokes. Ricardo Gouveia of UCF won the individual title, shooting a final-round 66 to finish 11 under on the tournament (204).

Bryant will take to the links again on Sept. 26-27 at the Hartford Invitational.
