Bryant unable to make up ground at Classic

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – With a second-round 79 and a two-day total of 159, junior Samuel Russell (Southborough, Mass.) tied for 44th overall at the Classic at Shelter Harbor, but the Bryant University golf team struggled against stiff competition, finishing 15th overall in the two-round tournament.

Senior Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) recorded Bryant's best round of the tournament with a Sunday 76 to finish just three spots behind Russell, improving his card by eight strokes from the previous round.

Conor McGovern (Darien, Conn.) collected an 83 after leading the Bulldogs entering Sunday play to finish knotted for 61st, while Brendan Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) carded an 86 for a two-day total of 169 (T-77th) and Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) took home 81st with a two-round 173.

As a team, Bryant carded a 324 for Day 2 play, while Dartmouth held onto its Saturday lead to win the tournament with a 594. Princeton's Bernie D'Amato won a playoff to take home the Classic individual title with a two-round score of 143.

The Bulldogs will wrap up the fall portion of their 2011-12 schedule on October 17-18 at the NEIGA Championships in Brewster, Mass.
