Tombs ranks in top-10, Bulldogs struggle in first round of spring debut

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite a strong showing from senior Ryan Tombs (Bedford, N.H.), the Bryant University golf team struggled in its spring debut, finishing first-round action at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in 11th place.

Tombs carded a three-over 75 Monday at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., tying for eighth place in the 74-golfer field. But his teammates struggled in their first competition back from the winter hiatus.

Freshman Matthew Stafford (Suffield, Conn.) sits tied for 37th after the first round with a nine-over 81, where he is knotted with teammate John Roberts (West Hartford, Conn.), playing as an individual.

Sophomore Ryan Brown (Bedford, N.H.) and senior McKinley Slade (Saunderstown, R.I.) carded 87s on Monday (+15) to tie for 63rd, while rookie William Del Biaggio (San Jose, Calif.) enters second-round action tied for 67th after a day-one 88 (+16).

As a team, the Bulldogs shot a 330 (+42) and sit 24 strokes off current leader Sacred Heart (306). Fort Wayne sits in second (307), with Longwood ranking third (308). Robert Morris (311) and Towson (317) wrap up the top five.

Bryant returns to action Tuesday from LPGA International.
