Men's soccer open NEC play vs. Robert Morris, Saint Francis U.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After an extended, 11-day break, the Bryant University men's soccer team will return to the pitch to open Northeast Conference play, hosting Robert Morris on Friday (3 p.m.) and Saint Francis U. on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Bulldog Soccer Field.

Coming off an impressive 4-2 win over Hartwick on Sept. 28, Bryant has gone 2-0-1 since its last loss on Sept. 14, battling all the way back to a 4-4-1 non-conference record. However, all that truly matters is the next seven matches, which will eventually determine who represents the NEC in the NCAA Tournament in November.

Bryant's 2014 journey begins with Robert Morris and the nation's leading scorer Neco Brett on Friday. The Colonials, who enter Friday's contest with a 5-5-1 overall record, most recently took down George Washtington, 4-0, behind a quartet of tallies from Brett who enters NEC play with 26 points on 12 goals and two assists. An offensive powerhouse, Robert Morris has outscored opponents, 18-14, thus far this season, while Brenden Alfery has posted two three shutouts in goal for the Colonials. Last season, Bryant escaped Moon Township, Pa., with a 1-0 win thanks to score in the 71st minute from Ryan Kalan (East Norwich, N.Y.).

On Sunday, the Bulldogs welcome Saint Francis U. to town for a rematch of the 2013 NEC Tournament Semifinals. The Red Flash enter weekend action with a 6-4-1 overall record most recently coming off a 2-1 loss at St. Bonaventure on Friday. Sophomore Francis de Vries leads the team with four goals, while Pablo Medina has dished out five assists in 11 starts. Junior Andrew Garcia has logged all but 20 minutes between the pipes for the Red Flash, allowing just over one goal per contest. Last season, the Red Flash took down Bryant, 1-0, during the regular season but, the Bulldog sought their revenge in the NEC Semis with an epic PK victory.
