Bryant offensive surge falls short in 1-0 loss against Stony Brook

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite being able to apply a lot of pressure in the final 20 minutes of the match, the Bryant University men's soccer team was not able to convert on it, falling short in a 1-0 game with Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Field.

Coach Purcell's Comments

"I'm proud of how we played in the second half. I think we outplayed them. I'm proud of how we responded in the second half. They came out like they wanted to win; they showed the will to win. We were able to push ourselves and be mentally tougher and I thought we deserved to win."

Key Moment

  • In the 87th minute, Charlie Booth (Concord, Mass.) played a ball to the far side of the box, where Alexander Eby (Kalamazoo, Mich.) hit it first time into the center of the area. After a deflection, Felipe Cypriano (Malden, Mass.) was able to get a lunging effort towards goal, but it rose over the bar and the score stayed 1-0 Stony Brook.

  • 44th minute – Stony Brook 1, Bryant 0 – After a handball in the box was called on the Bulldogs, Serge Gamwanya stepped up for Stony Brook and he fired it right down the middle, past keeper Nick Stewart.

  • The Bulldogs recorded a season-high 12 shots, with seven coming in the second half.
  • James Cochrane (Sandy Hook, Conn.)Jared Lee (South Setauket, N.Y.) and Matthew Kane (Lincoln, R.I.) all made their first appearance of the season for the Bulldogs. For Lee and Kane, it was their first game action of their career in a Bryant uniform.
  • Drew Rushton (Middlebury, Conn.) recorded his first two shots of the season Saturday afternoon.
  • Bryant had more shots and more corners than their opponents for the first time this season.
