Amaya's header earns Bulldogs a point in 1-1 draw

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to three games after a 1-1 draw with Robert Morris on Friday afternoon in Moon Township, Pa.

Game Information

Bryant 1, Robert Morris 1 (2OT)

Records: Robert Morris 2-7-3 (1-0-1 NEC), Bryant 1-7-2 (1-0-1 NEC)

Location: Moon Township, Pa.

Coach Purcell's Comments

"Another gutsy performance from the Bulldogs. Showed a ton of character to fight back from being down. It was a complete team effort. We totally dominated in the first half but a lack of energy to start the second put us on our heels. We regained the momentum with 15 minutes to go and had a few chances to win it in regulation. Overtime was a battle with both teams having chances to win it."

Key Moment

  • Late in the second overtime, Robert Morris had a golden opportunity to win the game, but Nick Stewart (South Windsor, Conn.) stood strong on a shot from 12 yards on the right side of the box to keep the score knotted at one.

Scoring Summary

  • 52nd minute – Robert Morris 1, Bryant 0 – Bayley Winkel's eighth of the season gave the Colonials the lead as Keane McIvor chipped a ball over the defense, and Winkel was able to beat Stewart and fire it home.
  • 72nd minute – Bryant 1, Robert Morris 1 – Freshman John Amaya (Rye, N.Y.) tied it with a header flicked inside of the far post off a Vasil Mastur (Millburn, N.J.) corner.

Stats/Notes

  • The Bulldogs are unbeaten in three straight matches for the first time since late September 2014 when they went 2-0-1 in a three-game stretch.
  • Both Amaya and Mastur recorded their first career points in the matchup.
  • Bryant stayed unbeaten against the Colonials all-time, improving to 6-0-4.
  • The Black and Gold matched a season-high with 15 shots on the afternoon.
  • Stewart recorded five saves in the match, marking his fourth-straight game hitting that mark.
