Bulldogs lose double OT heartbreaker vs. Saint Francis U

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's soccer team lost a double-overtime heartbreaker to Saint Francis U 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, dropping their NEC record to 1-1-1.

Coach Purcell's Comments

"Technically, I don't think it was our best performance, but our desire and effort were excellent again. It's a disappointing loss, to say the least, and I feel for the players. They had worked hard all game and losing in double overtime is never an easy pill to swallow. We'll learn and move on."

  • Andres Vega ended the Bulldogs' unbeaten streak when he directed a header past keeper Nick Stewart and ended the match in the 104th minute.

  • 104th minute – Saint Francis U 1, Bryant 0 – The Red Flash were able to put together a nice counter-attack after a Bryant push, that ended with a Kyle Moerschbacher cross into the box that was headed home by Vega.

Stats/Notes

  • The Bulldogs played their third double-overtime game in their last four outings, with this being the first time it ended before the final horn.
  • Senior Nick Stewart (South Windsor, Conn.) was again fantastic in goal, recording seven saves.
  • Junior Charlie Booth (Concord, Mass.) led the Bulldogs in the shot department, finishing with three on the afternoon.
  • Sophomore George Gill (Cork, Munster, Ireland) made just his third start of the season and his first since Sept. 4 against Providence.
