Bryant surrenders two late goals in heartbreaking loss to Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a magical moment from sophomore Charles DeSantis (Saint-Mathias-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada) early in the second half, the Bryant University men's soccer team was not able to pull out a win against Brown on Friday afternoon on the road.

Game Information

Brown 2, Bryant 1

Records: Brown 1-0-0, Bryant 0-3-0

Location: Stevenson-Pincince Field | Providence, R.I.

Coach Purcell's Comments

"There were a lot of positives to take from this game. We looked composed and confident when we had the ball, created several chances and battled very hard. But we cannot give the game away with ten minutes to go. We need to be stronger in all phases of our game and find a way to secure the win."

Key Moment

After the initial clearance was deflected from Bryant's defense, Daniel Schiller corralled possession at the top of the 18 and fired a shot into the bottom left corner to give Brown the lead with just 1:50 left on the clock.

Scoring Summary

  • 48th minute – Bryant 1, Brown 0 – DeSantis scored the go-ahead goal for the Bulldogs after flicking the ball over a defender off a throw in and then off one bounce, hitting it hard and low, past the Brown keeper and into the back of the net to give Bryant the lead.
  • 81st minute – Brown 1, Bryant 1 – Derek Waleffe finished a scrum in front of the net that was created from a corner that had the ball cleared away and then another shot blocked. After that, Waleffe was able to rise and get his head to the ball and put it into the corner.
  • 89th minute – Brown 2, Bryant 1 – Schiller was the recipient of a fortunate bounce off a clearance try from a Bryant defender and he was able to take a touch and slice one into the net.

Stats/Notes

  • DeSantis' goal was the first of his career in his 13th career appearance. He finished the day with a team-high three shots, with two on frame.
  • Senior Ricardo Becerra (Southlake, Texas) was the only other Bulldog with multiple shots, finishing with two.
  • Junior Olivier Larente (Garches, France) finished with a season-high five saves.
