Bryant's offensive outburst enough for draw with Mount

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite a 22-shot, 11-corner performance for the Bryant University men's soccer team, they only had one goal to show for it and shared the spoils with Mount St. Mary's on Friday night.

Game Information

Bryant 1, Mount St. Mary's 1 (2OT)

Records: Bryant 2-7-3 (2-1-2 NEC), Mount St. Mary's 2-8-4 (1-3-2 NEC)

Location: Waldron Family Stadium | Emmitsburg, Md.

Coach Purcell's Comments

"We're a little disappointed that we couldn't get the well-deserved win, but it was by far our best attacking performance of the season. We talked before the game about being more offensive as a team and I couldn't have asked any more from these young lads tonight."

Key Moment

After forcing a turnover in opponent's territory, freshman Ben Williams (Unionville, Ontario) tallied his third goal of the season off a good cross from junior James Cochrane (Sandy Hook, Conn.) to get Bryant on the board.

Scoring Summary

  • 10th minute – Bryant 1, Mount St. Mary's 0 – It was a good passage of play as sophomore Antonio Terceros (Toronto, Ontario) sent Cochrane flying down the left flank. He hit it with his left foot to the penalty spot, where Williams had loads to space to put a header low and hard past the keeper.
  • 24th minute – Bryant 1, Mount St. Mary's 1 – Boris Nana Tonzi leveled the game after doing a good job of staying onside and receiving a pass in the middle of the box and curling a shot into the bottom right corner.

Stats/Notes

  • Bryant's 22 shots are the most since a 2013 match with LIU Brooklyn. The 11 corners are the most since a 2015 match against Fairleigh Dickinson. Both matches also ended in draws.
  • Williams' goal was the third of his inaugural Bulldog campaign, increasing his point total to eight on the season.
  • His eight points are second in D1 history for freshmen, behind Brett Larocque's 13 in 2012.
  • Cochrane's assist is the first of his 2018 season and his first points since 2016, when he recorded a goal and an assist.
  • The Bulldogs ended the night with a 22-5 shot margin and 11-3 advantage in corners.
  • With the draw, Bryant moves into a tie for third with Fairleigh Dickinson in the NEC standings with three matches to play. The Black and Gold are in search of their first postseason berth since 2014.
